Jump Into Life! E-zine
Pump Up Your Energy, Creativity and Joy
This is a sample of a monthly "as I can get to it" newsletter with ideas, resources, stories and inspiration. If you are like me, you find it hard to get to those weekly ezines you subscribe to. (I either save them to read all at once or delete them feeling guilty because I might be missing something important. My hope is that this will arrive JUST when you are ready for a boost of energy and inspiration.)

Energy Tip
If you’ve been in my workshop, you’ve heard this. But let me remind you. One of the quickest and easiest things you can do to pump up your energy is to add more water. A new study shows that 70% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. With the amount of soda and caffeine we consume,
it’s no wonder. Those are both dehydrators. If you want to feel better overall, add water. I’ve learned to make it a habit by carrying it with me at all times — in the car, in meetings, when I’m out walking. I have a fun colorful LARGE glass at home that is MY glass — I know I need to refill it at least three times a day (and more if I drink a cup of coffee or have a glass of wine with dinner — alcohol is also a dehydrator.)

If you feel tired, find yourself with fuzzy thinking in the afternoon, or suffer with headaches, you
might just be dehydrated. Need more reasons? Dehydration has been shown to be a factor in strokes.

Drinking more water helps your joints and even makes your skin look younger. And, hey, it will save you money!

Changing Patterns to Shift Your Energy

This year I finally decided it’s time to change a pattern I’ve been contemplating changing for years. I intend to turn myself into a morning person.

So…since I teach goal-achieving workshops among others, I know the tools. One of them is to announce your goal to the world — well, specifically to supportive people, not the naysayers of your life.
So, besides telling all my family and friends and my support group, I’m announcing it to you.
It’s only January 8, only eight days into this new year and new pattern, hardly a success story yet. But I have managed to get up at 6am every day so far, including New Years day, including today after arriving home at 1130pm after a Seattle workshop and long drive.

I have successfully changed patterns before…switching from drinking volumes of coffee and diet Coke to drinking my eight plus glasses of water a day…adding in the 3 fruits and 2 vegetables a day that are supposed to help me ward off cancer. Those are both truly well-ingrained new habits in my life and have been for eight years now.

Now, the morning person thing is the pattern I need to change; it may not be yours. (In fact, I know that many of my friends — especially the moms of infants and my military friends — would consider sleeping until 6 am sleeping IN — a delicious delight.) But we all have patterns that we could change for healthier, more productive ones. And you know which ones yours are. Hey, I’ve known this was a needed change for YEARS. For you, it might be switching from mindless TV vegging every evening to consciously watching one or two great shows and using the other evenings for more family interaction or taking that class you keep "talking" about. It might be adding in daily exercise/movement of some amount! It might be switching from soda and coffee to water.

Here’s what I’m doing on the morning person habit side that just might help you in changing whatever pattern you want to change.
1. I sat down on December 31st and wrote into every daily "to do" page of January the following:
-Get up at 6am
-Write or Walk first thing
(You’ve heard that doing something new for 21 days straight will make it a new habit. I don’t trust that. I figure I better go for 30. The fact is you have to check — or not check — these off each day. At some point the guilt factor sets in and you start doing it!)

2. I came up with a longer list of the steps to change this pattern along with a list of the projects I hope to take action on. I posted that list in my Daytimer for when I travel and posted it on my bathroom mirror to read twice a day when I’m home. Hey, if you are like me and early periodontal disease scared you into spending the $85 (for a toothbrush!), that two full minutes of brushing with your Soniccare twice a day gives you plenty of reading time.

Part of my list:
o Get up at 6 am every day including weekends (and that means getting to bed by 10!)
o Write or walk first thing, BEFORE you read the paper or open
your email!
3. Tell everyone.
4. I have a small white board in my home office where I post my "themes" for each year. For this year it reads:
o Morning person (up at 6 am)
o Action! — especially in marketing & article queries
o Flow of friends, family, fun & work
I read that every day as it is right behind my telephone.

So…I don’t know what patterns you might want to change, but I do know that changing patterns can take us out of the rut, the slump, the block. It opens up new energy channels. It’s certainly worth a try.
I have a hard time writing short — there is so much good information to share. The first version of this article was way too long for an ezine. If you want to read the longer version of this article — with more of the background, how-tos, resources (and the added trick that got me to finally stick to a daily yoga practice this past year), go to www.jumpintolife.net/writing/energy.

Postscript: I drafted this Jan. 8. It’s now January 24. I’m happy to report I continue to get up at 6 most every day. (Okay, it was 645 two times). The results? I’m getting so much done. And something
else has shifted. I’m taking action, making decisions, not putting them in a "to do" pile. I’ve had some delightful morning conversations with my husband that I would have missed out on in the past. I’ve had some magical moments walking and kayaking at sunrise. Is it automatic yet? Not exactly. I could easily turn back over some mornings. But knowing the benefits makes it a bit easier. And I’m sticking to it for 40 days (I read recently that was even more powerful) — I’ll let you know in a future ezine if that made it a real new habit.

HOT TIP
Share your pattern-change plan with me. I’ll report success stories in a future ezine — you can inspire others. (and just knowing your story will be shared can provide added accountability & inspiration.)
